Friends and family at University Carillon, we are adapting like everyone else in a more controlled quarantined environment. There are curfews, mandated masks, limited group size, and they are even considering closing the border and/or limiting who can fly in and out of the country. Many people have been out of work for months and there is no real help for them from the Dominican Republic government. In the midst of this, the Lord is showing us new ways to minister and we are adapting as best we can as a ministry.

  1. Bible schools doing live ZOOM classes. This was a challenge with internet issues, phone upgrades, affordability of internet, etc. Each week we now have classes in 2 locations. So exciting! We are looking at having special teachers share once a month from the US. Working on those details now. Reinhard Bonke was the teacher for one night; he was teaching on Power-Evangelism.
  1. Occupational training. For English classes, we are turning to Zoom as well. We will have a time of sharing, a short devotional and prayer time as a way to minister to the students before the class starts.
  1. Children’s programs. Instead of meeting with 50–70 kids all at one time, we have grouped them up by ages and in smaller groups with spatial distancing. With many people out of work this is an important time; as we not only share the word of God and disciple the children, we also provide a good, nutritious meal for them as well.
  1. Occupational training—sewing. We have recruited several women and men from our past classes as well as new recruits to make masks not only our programs, but for all of Redemption Village—over 1600 masks for adults and kids. Our sewing program have made masks for all our kids and all our programs.
  1. Food distribution. As funds come in we are putting together food boxes for families. We are working with Pastors who know where the greatest needs are, and those are the families we are helping.
  1. Finally finished our second floor space. We have a 10-year lease at $2 a year. God is good! We have our Sewing program here and when things settle down will have furniture building and other classes to help provide ways men and women can make money for their families. We do this so that we can attract those that might not step in a church and introduce them to Jesus.

Know that you all are in our thought and prayers. Miss you!

—Rick and Barb Sucher

As the new school year approaches—which will look different for everyone—we are committed to helping our friends and neighbors at Bonneville Elementary return to school successfully.

While our involvement in the Back to School Bash is limited this year, we are packing 150 backpacks with school supplies to ensure students have what they need to succeed.

The church has already purchased the backpacks and supplies, so if you would like to help, please donate to cover the cost. $20 covers a backpack full of supplies, but any amount you can give is appreciated.

We’re checking in with you and letting you know about some important info for our relaunch this weekend (June 20–21). And please know that as we plan and prep for our relaunch, things might change. You can always stay up to date by visiting our church website.

The way church will look when we relaunch will look a lot different, but we want to be clear with one thing: God doesn’t change, and our mission of being a community sent to help anyone and everyone become a follower of Jesus doesn’t either.

So as we open up our in-person gatherings, please feel no pressure to attend if you don’t yet feel comfortable.  Don’t worry … the relationships and family you’ve experienced and have at University Carillon are still here and strong. However, if you do, the way we go about our in-person worship gatherings will look different. Take a look:

Today’s family activity: Passover Bread

So, I didn’t think I could ask you to cook meat on a fire (unless your parents do it for you). And I don’t think any of us want to eat bitter greens (certainly not me). So, I thought you could try out making a traditional Passover unleavened bread. Here is the link to the recipe: https://www.alyonascooking.com/unleavened-bread-matzah/. If you don’t like that one, or don’t have the ingredients, there are a ton of different recipes online. If you haven’t noticed, we usually do at least one food activity a week. Basically, I think about food all day long!

First of all, we are trying to check-in to see who is still doing these activity guides. If you are still using these, please shoot Jesse a quick email at jessebachman@ucumc.net (Pretty Please!)

Second, in honor of the frog plague, play a good game of leapfrog somewhere inside or outside of your house. Also, if you look online there are some interesting (and mostly safe) variation of leapfrog to try!

Today’s family activity:Umm Ali Recipe

Since we are going to be spending a couple of weeks in Egypt, I thought we should try to make some Egyptian food. Many of their traditional foods are tricky to make especially in the middle of a quarantine, so I thought we could go with a dessert! This is Egypt’s version of something you might be familiar with: bread pudding. Here is the link for the recipe:

Today’s family activity: Whenever I think about the word brave, I tend to think about a superhero. My two favorite superheroes are Wonder Woman and the Black Panther. Both superheroes are brave in every way. They are ready to face any situation, whether it be scary or dangerous, if it means that they can keep others safe. They know their purpose and identity and fully live into it.

Here is the activity for the day. Imagine that you are a superhero and come up with the answers to these questions…

– What would your name be?
– What are your superpowers?
– Where do you live?
– Do you have any sidekicks?
– Do you have a weakness? (Mine would be chocolate chip cookies)
– Do you have a special vehicle or tools?

Now, draw yourself as a superhero! Make sure to share your drawing on our Facebook or share it with Felicia and Jesse via email!

So, this is going to be a little different than what we have done before. Slavery is not just an issue in the Bible, sadly it spilled into our country for far too many years (any number greater than 0 would apply, but it was much more than that). However, as terrible as slavery was and is, there are many incredible heroes around the world that rose up against slavery and racial injustice. I’m thinking about people like William Wilberforce, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr. the list goes on and on. Do some research and find out some interesting things about one or a few of these people. Want to really impress your parents? Create an interactive presentation. Or, if you are all schooled out, and you are on the older end of the elementary age group, there is an incredible movie about the life of William Wilberforce called Amazing Grace. It’s rated PG, so parents you may want to do a little research first, but it is a tremendous look at someone who fought against slavery.

Today’s family activity: act out the story! We would love to see your best representation of this story. The way I see it: find the youngest sibling or person in your house, they get to be Joseph. The older siblings get to represent his brothers. Give the Joseph character some yummy food that the brothers have to come and bow and ask for. Then, eat the yummy food of course! What would be even better: get everyone in costume as best you can. Pillowcases, towels, and bathrobes can really come in handy for Bible characters. Have fun with it!

In our encouragement, we’re here with a challenge: continuing to bless your neighbors! We’ll have the encouragement card drop off in the church lobby, open M-F from 9 AM–3 PM.

Feel like writing/creating multiple cards? Even better. We want to bless our neighbors who receive the food at the food pantry so more cards, the better.
